> ABC Radio South West Victoria: During an interview on 12 August 2026, Victorian Socialists candidate Hera Sheppard stated without contest that Gina Rinehart was “pushing for Australian workers to work for two dollars a day”. This was innaccurate. Rineharts previous comments referred to African workers being willing to work for less than $2 a day, in the context of Australia’s international competitiveness. An on-air correction has been issued.

The ABC’s own 2012 lede: Australians “need to work harder to **compete with** Africans who will labour for less than $2 a day.” That is a competitiveness line. It is not “pay Australians $2.”

Julia Gillard, same day, same file: “It’s not the Australian way to toss people a $2 gold coin and then ask them to work for a day.” Gillard heard the slide in 2012. Sheppard filed it as a current wage bid in 2026.
