Sydney, 9 October 2023. Town Hall to the Opera House, the day after Israel declared war on Hamas. Honi Soit filed the purpose of the march as opposition to “Israel’s settler-colonial occupation.” USyd’s Jeremy Heathcote made the import explicit: Aboriginal dispossession and Palestinians are “the same things.” The 1788 kit, applied to Jerusalem.

This card files that slide. It does not file “there is no occupation argument” and it does not file “Palestinians are not a people.”

What did have a receipt:

  • Judea is Hebrew Yehudah. The name is on the map through Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic and Roman periods. After the Bar Kokhba revolt the Romans renamed the province Syria Palaestina. That is a rename. It is not a ship.
  • The Kingdom of Judah sat in those highlands, capital Jerusalem, Iron Age. Wikipedia’s own line: “Jews are named after Judah, and primarily descend from people who lived in the region.” Jew is Yehudi — a Judahite.
  • A 1967 settlement, a 1948 war, a Hamas charter, a casualty count: those are other meters. “Settler-colonial” as used here is the Australian template. It needs Jews to have arrived in Judea the way the First Fleet arrived in Port Jackson.

The slogan treats the people named for the place as foreigners in it. Open both maps.
