Unnamed Year 9, Sydney Town Hall, 13 August 2026. He told the ABC there had been “a bit of fight back” from teachers, then this. His friend added that they did not want “these people being in charge.” No statute, school rule, or incident is named. “Deranged people all throughout Australia” is the temperature, not the exhibit.

What the same coverage actually shows:

  • This was not a lone wag. The ABC and Guardian both name the National Union of Students. High School Anticapitalists helped. Greens MPs spoke. Jason Clare and Ben Carroll told them to stay in class.
  • Scale in the ABC copy is hundreds per city, not a national shutdown. SA Police (InDaily) put about 2,000 in South Australia. Brisbane looked like about 200.
  • One Nation polling in the mid-20s to 30s is the factual backdrop. That is a reason to pay attention. It is not “oppression they’re putting us through” until someone points at the putting.
  • In Bendigo, Hamish Knight, 17, offered a different claim that is at least checkable: Senate attendance, and “fights for the billionaires.” He did not table a number. If you have the attendance table, it belongs next to his name — not next to this Year 9 quote.

The walkout happened. The poll happened. “They’re putting us through oppression” still needs a they, a putting, and a through.
