Ocean acidification is the process of oceans becoming more acidic, making it hard for some marine life to thrive.

This lowers the pH, making the water more acidic.

If carbon dioxide emissions continue at the current rate, the surface ocean pH could change from the current 8.1 to 7.7 in the next 100 years. This means the oceans will become more acidic.

Generally, pH 7 is neutral, while a range between 0 and 7 is considered acidic and between 7 and 14 is alkaline. While the ocean pH is currently above pH 8, it is gradually decreasing, thereby become more acidic.

Current atmospheric CO2 concentrations are about 416 parts per million (ppm), while ocean pH is about 8.1. By 2100 under ‘business as usual’ emissions, atmospheric CO2 is predicted to be about 936 ppm and ocean pH 7.8.

The average pH of surface waters around Australia has decreased by about 0.12 between the periods 1880–1889 and 2010–2019.

Therefore, acidity of surface waters around Australia has increased more than 30 per cent over the past 140 years.

What this file does not do

It does not file “the chemistry is fake” or “a 0.1 pH shift cannot matter to shells.” It files “more acidic / acidification” against the same agencies’ own scale: now ~8.1, high-emissions ~7.7–7.8, still basic.
