Capture — oppression they’re putting us through

Verbatim (ABC)

One year 9 student said there was a “bit of fight back” from teachers to attend the protest at Sydney Town Hall, but he and his peers had “prevailed”.

“We’re just fighting against the oppression and racism that they’re putting us through and we’re making a change against all these racists and deranged people all throughout Australia,” he told the ABC.

“We just don’t want these people being in charge of this country, we have to do something to make a change,” his friend added.

No incident, school policy, or statute is named.

What else on that page is checkable (the good stuff)

  • Organised by the National Union of Students. Not a solo wag.
  • Scale in the ABC copy: “hundreds” in Melbourne; “about 200” in Brisbane; SA parliament “hundreds”; Perth “hundreds”; Bendigo “about 150.” SA Police (InDaily, same day) estimated 2,000 in South Australia.
  • Jason Clare and Ben Carroll told students to stay in school; Clare: protest on the weekend.
  • Hamish Knight, 17, Bendigo, separate claim: Hanson has “one of the lowest turnout attendance rate in the Senate. She fights for the billionaires and for herself, and that’s it.” Attendance is checkable; he did not cite a figure. Not the claim this card files.
