The Authority ranked the farms. The Senate heard the cyclones.

Land-based run-off remains the greatest contributor to poor water quality in the inshore areas of the Great Barrier Reef and is a major contributor to the current poor state of many inshore marine ecosystems.

The Reef Authority, water-quality threat page. Position statement, 17 February 2021: “Poor water quality is a major threat.” The pollutants named are farms: fine sediment, excess nutrients, pesticides. Plibersek, 25 July 2024: $200 million more for gully work and grazing, so UNESCO would not write “in danger.”

This card files that ranking. It does not file “mud never hurt a coral.”

What did have a receipt:

  • Senate, Ridd and Piers Larcombe: cyclone resuspension of seabed mud is “far more destructive to the Reef than agricultural practices.” The Consensus Statement, they said, did not treat that as the larger pulse.
  • Same inquiry: crown-of-thorns at Swains, 150 km offshore, “completely unaffected by runoff from the land.” A native starfish in plague numbers before European farms. The nutrient-from-cane story does not reach that reef.
  • The Authority’s own sentence is already hedged: “inshore areas.” The slogan travels as the whole Reef. AIMS’s cover highs in 2022 and the 2026 bounce are mostly mid- and outer-shelf, where the river is not the weather.

Grammar: greatest contributor, inshore, agricultural. Logic: a flood plume is not a cyclone’s 30 cm of stirred mud. Rhetoric: major threat.
