The greatest threat
Greatest is a ranking. The cover series kept naming cyclones and starfish.
Climate change remains the greatest threat to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Reef Authority’s refrain. It sits under reef-health update after reef-health update, including after the August 2026 AIMS report that cover was rising again: “Climate change remains the greatest threat… urgent global action.” Greatest is not “a threat.” Greatest is a ranking.
This card files that ranking. It does not file “the sea did not warm.” 2024’s bleach was real, and AIMS said it was the main killer that summer.
What did have a receipt:
- De’ath et al., PNAS 2012 — the government’s 50% paper — ranked the losses: cyclones 48%, crown-of-thorns 42%, bleaching 10%. Yasi in 2011 put the central Reef at its LTMP floor.
- Peter Ridd, Senate: “major cyclone events” primarily responsible for the cover declines in the monitored series. AIMS 2025–26 still names Koji and Narelle in the same summer as the recovery.
- AIMS’s own 2024–25 line is honest: bleach was the primary mortality that year, with cyclones and starfish in the mix. “Greatest threat” is the line that does not move when the cover does.
Grammar: remains, greatest. Logic: a ranking that never updates is a slogan. Rhetoric: urgent global action.
